A quick confession before we start: if you tried to visit securityncigars.com on October 15 and got a Bluehost 404, that was me. A fat-fingered author poked at his DNS settings with all the precision of a man defusing a bomb in boxing gloves. It’s fixed, and I have been sentenced to read the manual.
Some news stories you read twice because they’re serious. This one I read twice because I was grinning. At about 6:10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14 (hours before the 10 a.m. opening), a black bear let itself into the Mammoth Lakes branch of the Mono County Free Libraries and helped itself to the staff snack stash: “peanut butter, a selection of peach cups, a pawful of cookies and — of course — one jar of honey,” per the library’s own release. The date is the punchline: Winnie-the-Pooh was first published on October 14, 1926. After browsing the new releases and the reference desk, our patron showed itself out. No shelves toppled, no books harmed, and “the honey jar has not been returned at time of publication.” (UPI has the story too.)
Director of Libraries Josef Bopp handled it with the dry wit of a man who has clearly seen things: “we do remind patrons- and perhaps more importantly our bears- that snacks are not part of the circulating collection.” I respect a bear with a plan. It hit the target before opening, went straight for the honey, did no collateral damage, and exfiltrated clean. Low-profile. Reliable. Quiet competence. Meanwhile, I can’t even edit my own DNS records without taking the site down. The real lesson is the boring one the library included: if you live in bear country, lock up the snacks. A good security posture beats a clever bear every time. Happy 100th, Pooh. Pour a dram for the old bear.
